This page will document the creation of a Very, Very Large Playable Stringed Instrument. I will create this artwork as the Salem (Oregon) Art Association Artist in Residence this summer, and then showcase it at the Salem Art Festival on July 21st, 22nd and 23rd.
I will create a very, very big, playable string instrument, using wood, metals and found objects. The instrument will be created during the residency. It will be over 10 feet high,3 feet deep, and 5 feet across, made of wood, metals, and found objects with super large strings and other playable elements. It will have an organic design: part original sculpture, part original musical instrument. There will be public access to the planning and building process of the project, where people can watch and participate in the creation of the instrument, assisting me and a guest team of artists, musicians, and instrument makers in the process. The instrument, when complete, will be accessible to the public to view and play. Sculptural wooden steps may created so instrument players can reach the and pluck the strings up and down the instrument. I will also compose music using the completed instrument and stage interactive performances using the instrument while it is exhibited.
